In the early 1990's, tomato salsa surpassed ketchup in sales, claiming the title as the world's most popular condiment. We've all had it from a jar or in our favorite Mexican restaurant, but it is a quite simple homemade dish.
The ingredients for a tomato salsa are pretty obvious, tomatoes...roma are my favorite, but any kind will do, chile peppers...whichever kind you prefer, onion, garlic, and cilantro.
Homemade Salsa
When making homemade salsa everything is chopped or diced, depending on the texture you prefer in your tomato salsa. I like mine chunky;) After chopping all the ingredients, combine them in a bowl with a little lime juice, mix together, and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to combine. This is your basic tomato salsa recipe. From here, you can be creative and adjust the flavor of your recipe to meet your own tastes. If you would like more heat, add some chile peppers, DUH!
Salsa Tomatillo is one popular twist on this recipe. Just substitute tomatillos for the tomatoes. Although they are sometimes hard to find, the small green fruit adds great taste to your tomato salsa. And if you are looking for a green sauce instead of red, this is the way to go.
If you prefer a roasted flavor, put all the tomatoes, peppers, and garlic on a baking pan and roast in your oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Using tongs, turn everything over, and roast for another 10 minutes. After everything has cooled down, pull as much of the charred skin off as possible. Or if you like the flavor, you can leave the skins on, I do. Then, blend the ingredients in your food processor or blender. This

will add a depth to the flavor of your tomato salsa recipe, I guarantee that you will love.
However you decide to do it, the important thing is to make your tomato salsa how you like it! Make it personal! And Enjoy!
